Damon Flanagan Biography

Damon Flanagan was born in Southampton in 1980 where he began his musical education based on the Suzuki method. At the age of 16 he became joint concertmaster of the Southampton Youth Orchestra, leading them on three European tours and playing Vivaldi Concertos on numerous occasions. Damon studied on the Hampshire Specialist Music course. From 1998-2003 Damon studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Professor Simon Fischer receiving his Bachelor and Masters degree. His studies were completed in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the renowned concert violinist Ilya Grubert.

Damon won first prize in two prestigious chamber music competitions at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and his string quartet was chosen for events hosted by the Lord Mayor of London and The Queen.

 In January 2011 Damon visited the Jersey Academy of Music as a specialist Violin Teacher to kick start their new string programme. Damon now runs a successful private teaching studio in South East London and other teaching posts have included Professor of violin at Junior London College of Music and at present he is a Violin and Ensemble Teacher at Junior Trinity College of Music and Kings School Canterbury. Damon's other teaching works includes the London Music Masters Pathways Project where he teaches a group of talented young students selected by audition. 

His freelance orchestral career started with engagements with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and English National ballet in 2005. He now regularly performs with such orchestras as: Royal Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony. He had played principal violin with Opera North and sub principal with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. He regularly performs at the BBC Proms and such soloists as Nigel Kennedy and Jose Carreras and has many other broadcasts for BBC Radio 2 and 3 and BBC 2, BBC 3 and BBC 4. He has also recorded for Dutton, Naxos many other classical specialist labels.

Damon Flanagan leads the Mancini String Quartet and Flanagan Piano Trio. They both have a busy schedule of recitals,private and corporate functions. Recitals have included Sutton Synagogue, on board Saga's Rose, Ruby and Sapphire Cruise liners and The Garrick Theatre in Lichfield.

Damon's work in the Pop and TV sector has seen appearances on BBC Children in Need with Take That, ITV'S Record of the Year Show and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year as well as DVDs and albums with The Priests, Pet Shop Boys, Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds and Kylie Minogue.
